Dog bites and homeowner’s insurance
When you think about common homeowner’s insurance claims, flooding and storm damage often come to mind. We tend to think of our family dog as being a relatively low risk to our policy premiums. But, in 2015, dog bites accounted for more than one third of all homeowner’s insurance liability claims.*
Keep Your Dog Secured: When your dog is outside of your yard or home, make sure you have them on a leash that allows for quick and easy control.
Consider the Worst: Lots of owners think their dog simply doesn’t have the temperament to bite someone. Unfortunately they are often wrong. Dogs may bite a person who enters your home that they’ve never met before, or in perceived defense of their puppies or even your children. Even good-natured dogs can bite someone.
Keep a Watchful Eye: If you have visitors in your home and your dog is inside, keep watch. Pay attention to your dog’s behavior and be prepared to step in and handle any situation. If you can’t watch over your dog carefully, consider locking him inside a room where he can’t reach your guests.
Good dogs can make decisions that harm people, and can cost you. Make sure that you’re being a responsible owner.
